Hunter Wildlife Rescue (Native Animal Trust Fund Inc.) is the first animal rescue organisation established in NSW. Covering over 1 million hectares, our dedicated group of volunteers work tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate and release injured, sick, orphaned and distressed native animals back to the wild.

Our organisation is run completely by volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure that all animals in our care receive the highest quality of care. Roles vary and change throughout the organisation - some members rescue, some transport, others care, and some take care of the essential business of running our vital foodbank.  Get involved >

Our rescuers and transporters are an integral part of our rescue network. With dozens of calls per day, we do our best to attend incidents in a timely manner. Rescuers are tasked with safely retrieving and containing any native wildlife that may require assistance before transporting to a carer or veterinary clinic.

Dedicated carers work tirelessly to rehabilitate injured and sick wildlife and prepare them for re-release. Some animals require round-the-clock attention for their feed and medication needs to be met. Orphaned wildlife require gentle rearing and eventually

pre-release training to teach them life skills they will need to survive.

Our primary objective is to return all rehabilitated wildlife back to the area from which it came when they are healthy and are able to fend for themselves.​ Returning native wildlife to their natural habitat preserves the integrity of our ecosystems and the populations of unique native species that live within them. 

HWR provide compulsory Introductory Training for all new members. The course provides the knowledge to safely rescue and transport several common species.

Additionally, Species Specific Courses are run throughout the year to train members in the handling, care and treatment of rescued wildlife. Get involved >

Our early education program aims to educate young people about the importance of conservation in their own back yard and inspire the next generation of wildlife advocates.

HWR works with local communities to achieve positive outcomes for local wildlife. The ongoing development of our Rescue Centre provides opportunities to continue this active relationship. After a disaster, the work of wildlife rescue and groups begins. Increases in fires, floods, extreme heat days and drought all call for a coordinated and experienced wildlife emergency response. HWR move in to action and alongside SES, Fire and Rescue and other emergency response groups, we safely rescue effected wildlife.

Our bush feeding programs aim to support wildlife through periods of extreme weather or disaster. 

Every year, we triage hundreds of animals that have been attacked or displaced by invasive species.

Pollution

Unfortunately, fauna entangled in netting and fishing line is an increasingly common occurrence.

Australia is one of the world’s deforestation hotspots. More than 45% of our forests have been cleared since European settlement, including 3 million hectares of remnant forests. HWR work with on-site specialists to ensure the best possible outcome for wildlife affected by habitat loss.
