Make a
difference

Become an Active Member

We are always in need of rescuers and carers to facilitate the capture and rehabilitation of sick, injured and orphaned wildlife.

Care can take many forms! It's often thought that you need acres of space and a free schedule to care for wildlife.
While some of our carers are retired or not currently working, many are full, or part-time employees, or business owners.

You decide how to fit this rewarding role into your lifestyle and commitments.

Roles for Active Members

WILDLIFE
TRANSPORTERS

Transporters are key to ensuring positive welfare outcomes for the wildlife that comes into care.

Transporters transfer injured wildlife requiring rehabilitation from local vets to carers, or between carers. This is a huge responsibility and essential to keep HWR running smoothly.

Transporters often have  opportunities to release

rehabilitated wildlife back into the wild.

Transporting is extremely rewarding and an awesome way to meet other members and establish a network that will support you throughout your wildlife rescue journey.

WILDLIFE
RESCUERS

Rescuing injured, sick, orphaned or distressed wildlife is not for the faint of heart. Wildlife rescue is both heart-breaking and rewarding in equal parts.

Once you become an active member within HWR, you will be licenced to perform basic rescues such as birds, possums, turtles, some reptiles etc.

In order to perform rescues with more dangerous animals such as monitors, kangaroos, wallabies, snakes etc. you will need to complete intensive 1-on-1 training with the relevant species coordinator.

Rescuers have access to a mobile app where “jobs” appear, and they can then accept according to their level of confidence, availability and proximity to the rescue.

Rescue is extremely rewarding and an awesome way to meet other members and establish a network that will support you throughout your membership with us.

WILDLIFE
CARERS

Becoming a member of HWR and completing the Introduction to Wildlife Rescue course will licence you to Rescue and Transport wildlife. If you are keen to care for wildlife, additional species-specific courses are required to gain the necessary skills.

Species-specific courses are run throughout the year - mostly on weekends. They are held at the Wetlands Education Centre, last roughly six hours, morning tea is provided, and there is a small cost associated with each event.

If you are interested in care, it’s a good idea to seek out the advice of your area coordinator and/or relevant species coordinator to discuss which species/life stage may be suitable for your care.

For example, someone with a young family may not be able to provide around the clock care to a baby possum but is able to have a pre-release aviary on their property.
